Research in Motion (RIM), known for its BlackBerry smartphones, on Wednesday, announced the launch the PlayBook in India. The seven-inch tablet along with accessories will be available across the country starting Thursday at Rs 27,990 for the 16GB version, Rs 32,990 for 32GB, and Rs 37,990 for the slate with 64GB storage.
The PlayBook runs a completely new operating system built by QNX Software Systems, a Canadian company that was acquired by RIM in 2010.
"This tablet is perfect for both large organizations and individuals," said Frenny Bawa, RIM Managing Director for India. "We are stepping into a new era of mobile computing and opening up new and even more exciting opportunities for developers and content publishers with support for Adobe Flash, Adobe Mobile AIR and HTML-5," she added.
The tablet, measuring less than half an inch thick and weighing in at 425gms, is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and two HD cameras for video conferencing a video capture.
As far as connectivity is concerned, the device supports Wi-fi networks, with added functionality for users who own a BlackBerry smartphone (running OS 5.0 or higher).
These customers can use Bluetooth technology to wirelessly connect the slate to BlackBerry phones to access their smartphone's e-mail, address book, calendar, memopad and BB Messenger.
The Playbook will be distributed nationally through Redington India and Ingram Micro, initially in 1,000 retail stores across eight cities, company officials said.
