The markets rallied with strong volumes today and both benchmark indices gained more than 2.5%. Though banking and oil marketing companies were the biggest gainers today, other sectors also closed with handsome gains. The Sensex closed at 18234 (provisional), up 507 points from its previous close, and the Nifty closed at 5470 (provisional), up 150 points. The CNX Midcap index was up 2.1% and the BSE Smallcap index gained 1.7%. The market breadth was positive with advances at 1054 against declines of 266 on the NSE.
