Maruti Suzuki strike disrupts production; shares fall

Maruti Suzuki is facing a disruption in production at its plant in Manesar after a section of workers went on strike on Saturday, a spokesman for the company said.

Around 800 workers went on strike demanding the recognition of a new union, Maruti Suzuki Employees Union, the spokesman said, resulting in a production loss of about 650 units on Saturday.

Maruti, 54.2 percent owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, produces about 1200 vehicles a day from the Manesar plant.

At present, the company has one workers' union that is recognized by the management -Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union.

Shares of the company fell as much as 1.9 percent on Monday to 1,210 rupees in a weak Mumbai market.
